There is arguably nothing more frustrating than when you want to practice your disc golf skills, but can’t because you’re constantly on the road! No worries–today’s post has you covered.
We’re highlighting some of the best portable disc golf baskets on the market to help you always have access to the game when you want it.
The baskets we discuss today are sufficient for both serious disc golf players who are constantly on the road, as well as families who want something fun they can take on trips!
What is a portable disc golf basket?
A portable disc golf basket is any disc golf basket which can be moved from one location to another.
Technically, all disc golf baskets in the world that come from manufacturers are portable–but whether a basket is easy to transport from one point to another determines its portability.
To illustrate further, disc golf baskets are divided up into four general categories: travel-friendly baskets, light-duty baskets, narrow target baskets, and heavy-duty baskets.
While all four categories are technically portable, the heavy-duty baskets are extremely cumbersome and difficult to move because of how heavy and sturdy they are.
Portable disc golf basket uses
Let’s look at the next three categories and their typical uses.
Light-duty baskets are generally what serious and dedicated disc golf players would have on their own at-home practice course.
These baskets are made to hold up better against wind and strong throws while still being light enough to assemble and disassemble easily.
These baskets can be used either at home or at your local park or disc golf course for practice.
Light-duty portable baskets are a great choice for some players, but not ideal for others.
A light-duty portable disc golf basket might not be for you if:
- You have trouble lifting objects over 50 pounds
- You are constantly on the road travelling and need to travel as light-weight as possible
- You do not play disc golf that often or you’re a parent looking for something for your child
A light-duty portable disc golf basket would be ideal for you if:
- You’re a competitive disc golf player needing to keep your skills sharp at home
- You’re a beginner or advanced player who loves the game and wants to be able to practice more
- You live in a climate with regular bad weather and want something that can hold up decently well
Narrow target baskets are sometimes half the diameter of normal-sized baskets. They’re designed for a very specific purpose: to help you develop your putting skills.
These baskets can be either light-duty or heavy-duty.
Narrow target baskets are ideal for you if:
- You’re wanting to advance your disc golf skills to the next level
- You want to perfect your putt
Narrow target disc golf baskets are not ideal for you if:
- You’re just looking for a general disc golf practice basket
That brings us to our last category: travel-friendly disc golf baskets. These are not ideal for you if:
- You’re looking for a basket that can hold up well in bad weather
- You’re looking for an everyday practice basket that you’ll use often to develop your skills
These are ideal for you if:
- You’re a parent and you want an indoor or outdoor practice basket for your kids
- You’re a serious disc golf player but you have to travel frequently and want something light-weight and compact you can take with you on the road
- You want something fun you can take along on roadtrips, camping trips, or family reunions
Portable disc golf baskets vs. competition baskets
Heavy-duty baskets are what are used during professional competitions. These baskets are PDGA-approved and built according to the Professional Disc Golf Association’s guidelines for standard baskets.
Competition baskets are solid and durable, and typically driven into the ground by stakes to help hold them steady.
Consumer-friendly portable baskets, on the other hand, are not made to stay outdoors for long periods of time.
If you want your portable basket to last, you’ll have to take good care of it by bringing it under shelter when you’re done with it.
Leaving it exposed to the elements and bad weather can result in it having a short lifespan.
What to look for in a good portable disc golf basket
What you’re going to look for and what you’re going to avoid in a good portable disc golf basket is largely going to depend on what you intend to use the basket for.
We’ve written other articles on here about light-duty and narrow target baskets, which you should check out if you fall into those categories!
For the purpose of this article, we’re going to assume you fall into the last category: you’re looking for a travel-friendly basket. We’re going to base our “What to Look for” and product discussion upon that assumption.
For a good portable, travel-friendly disc golf basket, you’re going to want something that assembles and disassembles easily within a minute.
You’ll want to make sure it comes with its own case so you can easily travel with it.
If you truly want something light-weight and convenient, you’re going to have to sacrifice some of its durability and stability. These baskets, again, are not built to withstand strong winds, strong throws, or harsh elements.
Avoid heavy baskets with a lot of metal and chain. Try to stick to plastic materials since these will be lighter weight.
Best portable disc golf basket
There are a number of options when it comes to finding a portable disc golf basket, and the products below may prove a good place to begin your search.
Innova DISCatcher Traveler Target – Portable, Lightweight Disc Golf Basket
Innova is no stranger to high-quality disc golf materials. They’re one of the most well-known and highly trusted brands on the market, so it makes sense that they’d make one of the heaviest duty travel baskets!
Although the Traveler Target is lightweight and easy to transport, it qualifies as a heavier duty basket for a few reasons.
First of all, it does, in fact, have metal chains. These help mimic standard disc golf baskets to prevent things like spit-outs and pole bounces.
It also has five metal legs to help create a sturdy base.
One of the best things about this basket is the fact that it also has anchor rings and stakes so you can secure it to the ground if you want to for added stability.
Its basket is made of mesh fabric and it comes in three colors: blue, yellow, and red.
This basket fits our requirements because:
- It comes with a matching tote for easy transport
- It only weighs 15 pounds
- It is easy to assemble and disassemble
We would recommend this basket to serious players who need access to a practice basket while on the go, or families who really enjoy disc golf and want something that will last them awhile (provided they take care of it, of course!).
Although this is a sturdier travel-friendly portable basket, it still won’t last well when exposed to the elements for long periods of time, so make sure you disassemble it and store it in a covered location when finished.

Franklin Sports Disc Golf Set – Disc Golf – Includes Disc Golf Basket, Three Golf Discs and Carrying Bag
This disc golf basket comes with three discs: a distance driver, a mid-range disc, and a putter. We don’t recommend using these, however, since they are not very high-quality and will not enable accurate shots.
This basket is completely plastic with the exception of its fabric basket. It folds over itself in an umbrella design when disassembling it, and comes with its own matching tote for easy transport.
This basket is extremely light-weight, weighing less than 8 pounds! It has three legs that open in a tripod-like manner.
It comes in a bright lime green color so you can play with it from dawn ’til dusk and still have good visibility.
The Innova basket offers more color options–with this one, lime green is the only color choice.
This basket fits our requirements for a good portable disc golf basket because:
- It comes with a matching tote for easy transport
- It weighs less than 8 pounds
- It’s quick and easy to assemble and disassemble
We recommend this basket to parents who want something quick and easy for their kids to play with, or for families who want a lighthearted game for reunions or camping trips.
It’s more than half the price of the Innova basket, but that shows in the quality.
This basket will not hold up well in strong winds by any means.
Again, it’s a great choice for young kids or families, but not a good option for serious players.

DGA Mach Lite Portable Disc Golf Practice Basket
Another heavy-duty-yet-travel-friendly option for a portable basket is this practice basket by DGA.
It is the heaviest of all the baskets we’ve featured, weighing 26 pounds. It is built to regulatory size of standard PDGA-approved competition baskets.
It has 12 metal chains to help mimic competition baskets, but a mesh basket to keep it lightweight.
It also only has 3 legs for stability, as opposed to Innova’s basket which has 5. It also has anchor rings on the bottom of the legs though, so you could drive stakes through it to secure to the ground if you wanted.
This basket comes in two colors: green and orange.
This basket disassembles and folds easily, and comes with a matching bag.
It fits out requirements for a good disc golf travel basket because:
- It’s lightweight
- Easy to assemble and disassemble
- Comes with its own matching bag for easy travel
This is another great choice for serious players who travel frequently or families who play disc golf often and want something they can play with over and over again.
Like the other baskets, however, it won’t last you very long if you leave it exposed outside, so make sure you keep it covered under shelter when not in use.
